- Work inside and outside the Whittier tunnel has concluded for the season and will resume October 1, 2019.
The Alaska Department of Transportation, in cooperation with Granite Construciton, is working on the Whittier Tunnel. Project work will include crown drainage collection to reduce water flowing into the subgrade, reduce panel settlement and retard the corrosion of invert panel rebar, rail and rail connections. Work will also include invert panel concrete surface sealing to mitigate rebar corrosion, infiltration drainage collection, traffic control electronic signage, application of fluid-applied membrane roofing on the roof of the Whittier portal, and stabilization of the tunnel walls and ceiling to mitigate rock fall hazard. Project work is expected to be complete in winter 2019.
