What You Need to Know

Drivers should expect SINGLE-LANE TRAFFIC with flagging and PILOT CAR operations.
Please expect DELAYS up to 20 minutes.
Drivers should be aware that the grade on the large excavation is 9%. This is a steeper than normal road and it is also a gravel surface. Trucks hauling heavy loads are advised to use differential lock to help with traction. Motorhomes and travel trailers are advised to use low gear.
Motorcycles should use extreme caution on gravel surfaces.

Project End Result

The Alaska Department of Transportation, in cooperation with Harris Sand and Gravel, is working to improve 3 miles of the Richardson Highway about 30 miles north of Valdez. Work includes installing culverts to improve water management in the area and guardrail to reduce roadway accidents, as well as paving operations.
