What You Need to Know
  • Crews are working on the concrete barrier on the Johansen Expressway.
  • Drivers should expect LANE CLOSURES on the Johansen Expressway Monday through Friday, from 7:00am to 4:00pm.
  • Drivers should expect trucks entering and exiting the roadway, as well as reduced speeds.
  • Pedestrians should be alert to intermittent barrier work along the Johansen Expressway bike paths between College Road and University Avenue.
  • Pedestrians should be alert to flagging operations during active work hours.
  • Oversize load should contact Exclusive Paving prior to travel on the Johansen Expressway during active work hours.
Project End Result

The Alaska Department of Transportation, in cooperation with Exclusive Paving, is working at various locations throughout the Fairbanks and North Pole area. Work will include upgrading concrete barriers to current design standards on the Johansen Expressway, Mitchell Expressway, Steese Highway, and the Richardson Highway at North Pole. Work will occur during the 2020 and 2021 construction seasons. We will do our best to keep you informed of any project updates and appreciate your patience and cooperation during construction. This project is expected to be complete in August 2022.

Safety in all construction zones:

  • Traffic fines are double
  • Watch for changing driving surfaces
  • Watch for reduced speed limits
  • Be alert to and follow directions of flaggers
  • Drive with headlights on
  • Allow additional time when traveling
  • Watch for equipment and workers
