Road Closure

Beginning Sunday, May 22, both lanes of the Robert Mitchell Expressway at Cushman Street will be CLOSED.  Travelers from North Pole should follow the DETOUR at Airport Way to Peger Road. Drivers traveling towards the south Steese Highway to the Mitchell Expressway should follow the DETOUR at the Old Richardson Highway. 

Cushman Street under the Robert Mitchell Expressway Overpass is CLOSED. Pedestrian access will be maintained. 

The outbound Mitchell Expressway towards North Pole and the north Steese Highway is CLOSED.

What You Need to Know
  • Drivers heading towards North Pole on the Robert Mitchell Expressway should follow the DETOUR at 30th Avenue to the Old Richardson Highway.
  • Drivers heading towards the northbound Steese Highway on the Robert Mitchell Expressway should follow the DETOUR at Van Horn Road, towards Peger Road, and onto the Johansen Expressway.
  • Drivers traveling on South Cushman Street should follow the DETOUR at 23rd Avenue, towards Lathrop Street, and onto 30th Avenue.
  • Be alert to pedestrian flagging operations along Cushman Street.
Project End Result

The Alaska Department of Transportation, in cooperation with Swalling General Contractors, is working to repair the Cushman Street Overcrossing Bridge #1705. Project work includes the replacement of the outer three girders, including the bridge rail.

  • Traffic fines are double
  • Watch for changing driving surfaces
  • Watch for reduced speed limits
  • Be alert to and follow directions of flaggers
  • Drive with headlights on
  • Allow additional time when traveling
  • Watch for equipment and workers
