Project Marker Project

Project With Road Closure Project with

       ROAD CLOSURE

UNIVERSITY AVENUE REHAB - GEIST ROAD and JOHANSEN EXPRESSWAY ROAD CONSTRUCTION through October
Road Closure

East and westbound traffic at the intersection of University Avenue, Geist Road, and the Johansen Expressway is CLOSED between Fairbanks Street and Peger Road and will reopen in mid-August. Access to all Geist Road businesses remains open and can be accessed from Geist Road, except Wells Fargo, which must be accessed from University Avenue. Bike and pedestrian access will also be maintained through the construction zone.

What You Need to Know
  • SINGLE-LANE TRAFFIC will be maintained for north and southbound traffic on University Avenue. Turns will not be permitted at the Geist Road/Johansen Expressway intersection.
  • Please allow for additional travel time and plan to follow all construction signs for DETOUR routes. Peger Road will have an additional RIGHT-TURN LANE to accommodate increased traffic turning onto Airport Way.

Traffic Impacts

Drivers should expect DETOUR routes and SINGLE-LANE TRAFFIC for both north and southbound lanes of University Avenue, as well as temporary traffic signals.

Project End Result

The Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities, in partnership with Great Northwest, Inc., is working to widen and reconstruct the intersection of University Avenue and Geist Road/Johansen Expressway. University Avenue will also be repaved between Thomas Street and Wolf Run. We will do our best to keep you informed as work progresses and appreciate your patience and cooperation during construction.
